Cross-AI is the research collaboration between Stardots and BrainZell, investigating how drug responses in patient-derived neural organoids relate to measurable effects in people. Combining complementary technologies and the AI expertise of both companies, the partners aim to connect laboratory research with human measurements.
Two perspectives on drug response
BrainZell develops patient-derived neural organoid models and assays for investigating neural biology and drug responses. Stardots’ Psilmi research platform combines synchronised measurements of pupil dynamics, eye movements and cognitive performance. Together, these cellular and human perspectives offer a way to investigate relationships across different types of measurement.
BrainZell will draw on Stardots’ existing Psilmi platform as a human measurement reference within its organoid research workflow. Stardots contributes its platform, human-measurement and data-translation expertise; BrainZell contributes organoid models, electrophysiology and experimental capabilities.

A proposed focus on bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder is the proposed initial research focus. The partners aim to investigate whether patterns observed in neural organoid experiments can be related to human measurements collected through Psilmi. This work would explore potential links between laboratory drug responses and treatment-related changes in people; those links remain research questions, not validated predictors of treatment response.
Responsible research and validation
The combined human–organoid approach is at an early research stage. Any predictive or clinical application would require further validation and, where applicable, regulatory review. A selected subset of participants could provide matched human and organoid data, subject to the relevant consent, ethics, data-protection and donor-governance review.
Psilmi’s underlying dataset originates from a research project at Uppsala University, which Stardots accesses through collaboration with the university. Any use of these data in the programme remains subject to the applicable approvals and governance.
